Organisation structure and design

Current organisational theory talks about organisations as living organisms, creating a metaphor conveying continuous change and movement.  Ironically, where this might have been the case when the business was smaller, size creates silos, rules and regulations and a possible disconnect between owners and staff.

So the requirements now may be for a new role for the MD, the creation (and filling) of a new senior role, re-defining other senior roles, communicating the rationale to all staff and supporting teams and individuals to perform in the new structure.

MDs changing the structure of an organisation tend to be expedient perhaps out of loyalty or fear of upsetting people. Yet is the new structure really going to deliver benefit. Does it improve business throughput? Does it enable greater client focus?

At the heart of structure is the MDs need for control - well I started the business; external investors expect me to deliver; I'm a hands-on person.  All of which is true, yet the business is of a size that there needs to be a top team working together and it is the ability for this to happen that determines the shape of the organisation.
